I saw a comment on Facebook the other day that made me realize how sensitive people are to the phrase "happy holidays". I've heard grumblings of this for years but, blew it off. This year it is back but, with a vengeance. I mean people really get offended.  It doesn't bother me one bit. Why would anyone wish me a Merry Christmas? I find Merry Christmas to be presumptuous really.  No one who first meets me would know if I'm a Christian, if I'm Jewish, Muslim, and so on. Why would they offend me by wishing me something I may not celebrate? Listed below are a sampling of religious holidays in December:

5th - Ashura - Islam
8th - Bodhi Day - Buddhism
21-28 - Honukkah - Jewish
25 - Christmas - Christian

When you wish someone a Happy Holidays, you are not saying "I hate Christmas" rather you are saying "I respect you." No one is trying to get rid of Christmas and no one is trying to devalue the celebration of Christmas.

The past couple of trips to a neighborhood store we have had the same cashier. He is a young man, who just moved here from Washington DC! He is working several jobs and on Thanksgiving worked 27 hours because of Black Friday and not being allowed time off.  On top of that he was sick. But, he smiled at us, made conversation and we got to know him a bit. I had no problem with him wishing us a happy holidays. In the end what I cared about was that we were kind and showed God's love and concern for him. We aren't perfect, but, we try.

So, here it goes, I'm asking my fellow Christians to take up another cause. Stop being angry at retail workers (who by the way make nothing and if you are shopping at Walmart they make even less and are treated badly) for saying "Happy Holidays" and instead smile, make conversation, and be a blessing.

On behalf of our family to yours we wish you a Happy Holidays!

I never thought of Happy Holidays as respect to others. I like that. But I think saying Merry Christmas is a banner some carry to show they have put Christ back in Christmas. Maybe a time to think about the meaning? Because of your view point I think I won't be so eager to jump out there with Merry Christmas and not be offended by Happy Holidays. That may be a generational thing, not sure. But great thoughts.
